NYU Help

Okay. NYU is my top choice, but it is a pretty big reach (I'm slightly above LSAT median and well below GPA median - profile numbers are a bit fudged).

Based on when I sent in my application, it should be looked at for the first time within the next two weeks. I am very afraid of being outright denied. In my initial application I included my personal statement with a paragraph on NYU, and an optional one unrelated to NYU which discussed another important aspect of my life.

I am afraid that I did not adequately convey that if accepted there is a 100% chance I would attend and that NYU is perfect for me in every way. I have written up a brief three paragraph essay saying basically that.

Do people think I should send a brief email to the admissions office letting them know my overwhelming love of their school and include the essay as an attachment, or will that look crazy? Has anyone sent in something like this before their file was reviewed?

I think I will be denied anyway, but I don't want to just sit here helplessly while my dreams disappear.

Did you apply ED?

If you have a ~172/3.4, they will probably WL you.

I read somewhere on here (can't find it now) where NYU's admissions dean said they don't like optional essays like that. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that was NYU. Can anyone else find that?

Anyway, my instinct would be to hold off on your letter. If you are put on the WL, then send it in as a LOCI saying that if you're accepted, you'll withdraw all other applications and put down a seat deposit on the same day.

Is is true they don't like those? Does anyone know where that information is located??

I'm actually wondering the same thing, and have a similar letter prepared...my numbers are in my profile. I think I'm going to wait for the WL to send, though.

LSlobbyist wrote:I can't speak to the certainty of an extra essay at NYU, but I can say that if it is your unequivocal first choice, it cannot hurt your case to let them know, one way or another. In my own case, I had my recommenders mention it in their LOR and told an admissions officer myself during an one-on-one informational interview that I had with them.

If I were you, I would write a two-line addendum to be added to my file. Something like: "NYU Law is my first choice. If admitted, I will accept and attend."
thanks for the advice. did you have the informational interview at NYU or at another school?

If I was sure I would be waitlisted, then I definitely think the correct choice would be to wait until then to send it in; as I mentioned above, though, there is no sense in waiting and then receiving a denial.

I think I am sending it tomorrow, unless someone comes up with a strong reason not to.

hmm. i'm pretty sure you'd at least be WL if your LSAT is above median. i'm hoping to get more answers too...

I spoke with a counselor on the phone today and he told me that if I had something to inlcude I should definitely email them and get it put into my file. So I don't think it will hurt.

When I asked if it would delay my review he didn't say no though, he just said that since NYU doesn't have rolling admissions it don't matter. Based on LSN, I don't think NYU tightens later in the cycle to the extent of other schools, so I think he may be right.
