Re: Boston University Class of 2018
Thanks for starting this! Definitely excited about BU, I'm going back for the ASW on March 20, but this is going to be tough without money since I've been offered scholarships elsewhere and Boston is so expensive. BUT I'm really interested and will be curious to hear from other admitted students about what you all are thinking.

Does anyone know if BU is very generous with scholarships? Do they give out many full rides? I didn't see much on LSN from past cycles, but I remember seeing somewhere that BU is pretty good about giving out money

Those numbers represent a per year grant, correct?antiworldly wrote:http://www.abarequireddisclosures.org

Yes. So of all 677 students, 193 are getting somewhere between half and full tuition worth of grants per year.Liz_Lemon wrote:Those numbers represent a per year grant, correct?antiworldly wrote:http://www.abarequireddisclosures.org

Checking in! On paper I'm still deciding between BC and BU, but really I'm just delaying my decision so I can maximize any remaining leverage for scholarship negotiation. Would be happy to talk about Boston, BU, living in the city, or anything else.

Cost of living in Boston can vary substantially, but if you start looking early (start pouring through listings on Trulia and other apartment listing aggregator sites) you can find good places for a decent price. The range is huge... I have lived in a place in Brighton for 633/month, a great place in Somerville for 800/month, both of which aren't terrible. I have friends in Brighton and Allston that found steals at 550/600/month. On the other hand, it can get crazy expensive - my girlfriend lived in the South End and paid 3,400 for a one bedroom she split.iguazu wrote:Got schol info. today with admission packet. It takes planning but living and Boston can be (somewhat) affordable.

Anyone with experience living in Boston and DC know how comparable the COL is? Mainly for someone potentially deciding btw BU and GW. I've been in both cities a fair amount, so have a decent feel for their layouts and neighborhoods, but no idea on rent prices across neighborhoods really.

Re: Boston University Class of 2018
In my experience, living closer to the middle of the city is cheaper in Boston than DC, but not by a ton. They're both big cities and the COL will hurt either way, so I wouldn't base my decision on the +/- 2k/year difference in living expenses. No matter which one you chose though, you'll be able to find somewhat affordable living relatively close to the school.mickey_mouse wrote:Anyone with experience living in Boston and DC know how comparable the COL is? I know this is for admitted students, but does anyone know (or have read) if BU gives scholarships if you get off the WL?

When is everyone starting to do their apartment searching? Not sure when is too early because I definitely want a couple of roommates but since I'm on trail right now I have limited searching options.

same here. I put my name on the waiting list for 580 commonwealth. I've never been to Boston and know nothing about the neighborhoods so I think that'll be a safe choice for me.dontdoitkid wrote:When is everyone starting to do their apartment searching? Hi--2L here at BU if you have any questions. Happy to help answer them.
BU was not my first choice--in fact, I turned them down. Then they magically gave me a generous scholarship later in the cycle, I rescinded my deposit from another school and I haven't looked back. My numbers were OK, but I had excellent work experience.
I love the environment here, as much as one can reasonably like law school. The professors truly care and are really accessible. Job situation is not perfect but my class has done quite well so far. I have a job for next summer. Winter was awful, but hey, it's Boston. I like my apartment and neighborhood (although I'd rather live in Boston's schmancy neighborhoods). My classmates were not cutthroat during 1L--it was very supportive. It's a friendly campus.
Have at me if you have burning questions you want answered semi-anonymously. I will try to tell you the truth. Fake recruiting is crap, and I want you to find the right school for you. Best of luck with your cycle.

BU and BC gave me the same amount of money. do you think there is anyway to play them against each other?
GW also gave me the same amount and would be a lower COL because I could commute from home but that did not cause BU to raise my offer.
if i double deposited at BU and BC do you think my scholly would increase?
or is BC/BU and GW a better double deposit?
ideally i want to end up in boston but with more scholly money
thanks in advance!

Thank you for checking in. I have read great reviews on BU professors elsewhere, so it is reassuring to see it in your own personal experience =)RedGiant wrote:Hi--2L here at BU if you have any questions. Happy to help answer them.

Could you elaborate a bit more on the job prospective? I understand that about 2/3rd of the graduating class choose to stay in Boston, which is very reasonable considering how lovely the city is (if you can deal with the winter that is). Is this your long term plan as well?

How are you guys going to look for housing? I'm not from the area and hiring a realtor seems like a big hurdle
