Taking prep course in a different state than the one you intend to sit for?

Hello,

I recently signed up for a Barbri course, and I plan on sitting for the July 2020 UBE (New York). I am currently located in New York. However, my family is located in the midwest (but also a UBE state), and I am considering studying for the bar there since it will present far fewer distractions than trying to study in NYC.

Barbri does offer a UBE course in my home state, but I am wondering if there are any meaningful advantages or disadvantages to taking a Barbri (or other) prep course in a different state than the one you intend to sit for. Is there any benefit in doing the course in the state you intend to sit for, or is course location pretty much irrelevant?

Anyone have any tips/thoughts? Thanks!

Especially with the UBE, I'd say if there is any advantage at all it would be very slight. This is really the purpose of the UBE, to provide more freedom for exactly the situation you're in.

Wait are bar exam classes in person instead of online?

Yes. Barbri, at least, offers in-person courses. It also offers an online-only version for people who prefer that instead.

I'd just take the prep course for the state you intend to sit for and do it all online. I don't know anyone who didn't opt for the online version.
