My understanding was that we needed at least 1440 on MBE and 65 on all essays to pass. I guess not?
I used this calculator. Is this right?

Oh, no! You do not need a 65 on every essay.

When I took the bar, there was a guy who was easily top 5% of my class. We were discussing the essays after the first day, and there was a question that we absolutely disagreed on the area of law being tested. I thought it was torts/negligence and IIRC he thought it was like a contracts question or maybe professional responsibility.

One of us was getting a 45 for sure on that essay (I came on TLS and everyone had said it was torts/negligence so I think he got it wrong).

Anyways, we both passed. So it can be done, even if
you completely shit the bed on an essay.

You absolutely don't need a 65 on every (or even any) essay to pass. That said, the lower your average essay score is, the better you're going to need to do on the MBE in order to pass.
