Hi

I will be sitting the NY bar exam next week using my laptop.

Even though I will be using my laptop, I still like to handwrite little notes as I work things out and try to recollect the law.

The security policy and all of the rules surrounding the exam seem to be much more strict than I am accustomed to in the UK so I am looking for guidance on do's and don't's. I understand I cannot write anything on the seat ticket at any time. For the MPT, MEE and MBE parts of the exam, will I receive paper question papers? If so, can I write on these? Will any scrap paper be available to write on?

I guess it could depend on the exam administration but for my exam they gave paper and would give more if you asked. And we were all given our own test booklets/packets that we could write in. So as far as that's concerned, I don't think you'd have an issue. They did request that all testing materials be returned, so you probably won't get to keep your notes after the exam.

Yes, you can write in the booklets. They just don't want you writing on the seating ticket because it's the only printed document you can bring into the exam room which means it's susceptible to cheating (e.g., writing mnemonics, notes, etc.).

You can write all over the handout materials. Do not rip out any pages, and don't take anything from the room. They will tell you the rules over and over again, so don't be too worried about making mistakes, other than taking prohibited items into the exam, that's a big problem.
