D.C. Unauthorized Practice of Law Rule / bar exam

I took and passed the July 2018 bar in Maryland. I have a job at an office in D.C., and learned this week that I almost certainly have to take the D.C. bar too next July, because I scored too low on the MBE to waive in like everyone else does (making it really suck when lawyers keep asking me if I'm waiving in, then ask why when I say that I'm not waiving in).
Does anyone have any advice for this situation? Is there any possible chance I can transfer my essay score from Maryland's exam and just take the MBE portion, or is this not possible because it was a state-specific exam?
I am also worried about studying because I wasn't working while I studied for Maryland, but I will be this time. How much time did others take off when studying while working? How did you make it work?
Thanks.
