NYLE Timing
Was going to take the June NYLE, but now I'm thinking I'd rather use that time to study for the bar. I'm starting a job in September, any disadvantage to taking the NYLE then as opposed to now? The registration is by August 15th so I figure I'll have time to watch the videos after taking the bar. Anything I'm missing?

Re: NYLE Timing
So, I took the NYLE before studying for the bar. I think one of the advantages about taking it after the bar, is that you are familiar with the majority / minority view across all subject areas. This makes the NYLE a lot easier or straightforward to study for because when you're reading the outline, you'll think, oh, okay, that's what they do in NY. It will be very familiar to you. If you take the NYLE prior to any study for the NY bar (and if you haven't been to law school for some while) you're learning / reading about things from scratch and not as easy to understand the context, which seems too time intensive for what is required. Personally, would rather focus on bar exam. In a nutshell, you'll find the NYLE easier after your bar prep, especially if there is no particular rush to sit it. Not that the NYLE is difficult, you'll just be more familiar with the material.

Re: NYLE Timing
Just to add, I also think taking the NYLE in June is an unnecessary distraction. You will have to do some study for it. I worry a few posts have intimated that no study is required for the NYLE and that has lulled some people into a false sense of security. Possibly the first couple of NYLE exams were very easy, but my sense is that have increased the difficulty a tad. Not much, it isn't something to be concerned about, but people have failed because they underestimated it. Any study for the NYLE takes valuable time away from revising for the bar exam. The NYLE is so not worth that. If you were considering taking it in March, to get it out the way, fine, but not June. Especially if you don't have to.

Re: NYLE Timing
the funny part of this question is that you do not need to study for the NYLE. You just have to download the outline and control+f for answers. The biggest pain is watching the videos and answering those silly questions at the end of them

Do not underestimate this exam. Plus, BOLE no longer allows you to control + f the outlines (unless you can find the older version of the outline).
But, from my experience, it was a close call. I can't imagine taking this exam without the control + f.

Re: NYLE Timing
I mean, I took it this spring and control+f'd it. Not sure what version I had comparatively. If I could not have done that, yeah it would be a real exam that you'd actually have to study for.happyhour1122 wrote:Not 100% true.mt2165 wrote:the funny part of this question is that you do not need to study for the NYLE. At the end of the day, it's still an open book exam. If you can't control+F, you just have to be familiar enough with the outline to know where to look for an answer. You can still do this within two hours if you're a fast skimmer.
But yes, at this point I'd wait until the September exam, OP! You can watch the videos while you're drinking and celebrating after the bar.

Apparently they updated the outline last month for the June 2017 exam and it's no longer searchable. I'm glad I got it out of the way in March too!Winter is Coming wrote:When did they start the no control+f thing? I just took it in March and it was fine.

Trying to make this choice as well. With the BOLE making changes to the exam and the outline, seems like passing is not as easy as it used to be. If I take the exam in September, fail, and have to retake in December, am I SOL for a January swearing in? Will firm care? Thanks all!

Re: NYLE Timing
I really doubt you'd fail - you just need to be familiar with the outline. Is open book. No way would you fail after sitting the bar and reading the outline a couple of times. I just wouldn't go into it blind or be too flippant as people do fail, which must be so frustrating as there's no need to fail if you put a bit of time in. Worth pointing out there is no 'back' button. If you feel you're spending too long trying to figure out a question (not often) you can't save it to the end and go back, you have to move on.getschwiftyy wrote:Trying to make this choice as well. Re: NYLE Timing
I was definitely planning on studying if I were to take it in September. I would have about two weeks to watch the videos before the registration deadline, and then another month to study. Seems doable. Thanks for the advice!Blackhawks_Fan wrote:I really doubt you'd fail - you just need to be familiar with the outline. Is open book. Re: NYLE Timing
I took the Feb 2017 bar and the Mar 2017 NYLE. While the NYLE does not require an immense amount of studying (2 hours, just to familiarize yourself), it is very refreshing to NOT have the pressure of losing brainpower that could otherwise be focused on the bar.
Given that the outline can no longer use ctrl + F, maybe allot 4 hours to familiarize yourself with the material.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they just change the pdf type from parseable to a pdf image? If that's the case, all you need to do is run the PDF through Acrobat with text recognition, and it'll be Ctrl+Fable again.

Re: NYLE Timing
I just actually downloaded the outline from their website. It's password protected against editing, so you first have to print it to PDF, but then you can just convert to an editable PDF and the Ctrl+F works just fine.
Lol at whoever runs the NYLE thinking they know how Acrobat works.

To be honest, fucking with files to make searches work is probably the most practical "skill" they could test for when it comes to junior associates. Maybe this is all intentional!

Re: NYLE Timing
Does anyone know how long it takes to get results after the NYLE date? I am transferring my UBE score to NY and am trying to figure out all of these requirements (man, NY is insane). I am taking the June NYLE and want to get admitted ASAP.
Can you start the C&F requirements at any point? Can I start compiling the forms and having past supervisors fill them out etc? Sorry if this is the wrong place for this, but NY seriously has so many more requirements than anywhere else.

Re: NYLE Timing
You can turn in your application as soon as you finish sitting for the bar. You just supplement it as you finish other stuff. They get a big backlog by about November, so if you get it in in August or Sept, you should be good. My friends that got it in asap post-bar were sworn in Feb. I got mine in on 12/22 and was sworn in April. This was for the 3rd Dept (Albany). Hope that helps.Lawyerinwaiting89 wrote:Does anyone know how long it takes to get results after the NYLE date? Also, they are super-nice on the phone if you're confused and ask concise questions. Don't be afraid to call and ask stuff.

Re: NYLE Timing
Thanks for your help! I just transferred my UBE score because I passed in NJ. I didn't realize that there were so many additional C&F requirements, but I'm taking the June NYLE and working on the paperwork now. I assumed once you turned things in it's a quick process, but it sounds like it takes more time. And I'm also assigned to the Third Department. I'd probably be turning everything in by the end of June/early July but the benefit is I don't have to wait for results in November. So hopefully they'll swear me in ASAP.RedGiant wrote:You can turn in your application as soon as you finish sitting for the bar. You just supplement it as you finish other stuff.
