Does anyone know what are the alternatives if we can't make it? Esp for out-of-staters?

Good question... think they'll be emailing us soon.

Thought it was mandatory.

Swearing in is mandatory, but I don't think we have to do that at the ceremony.

I think they will allow a judge in your location to swear you in but you have to contact the court admin and get the appropriate documents sent to you. I vaguely remember a friend having the same issue.

Also interested in this issue. I'll be traveling during the swearing in ceremony, so there's no way I can make it.

They mail you a letter after you pay your license fee I believe. I think there's only 1 time for the Chicago district (assuming that's where you are) because there's a lot fewer people than in July.

I too am curious about this (if you're in Chicago, there is some variability). I'm trying to plan a couple of things that week (for work and with family in town), and it would be nice to know to what time we're assigned 5/4.
"Bar Admission Ceremonies will be held Thursday, May 4, 2017, in the five (5) Judicial Districts.
JUDICIAL DISTRICT 1
*9:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m.
James R. Thompson Center
Assembly Hall (Lower Level)
100 W. Randolph Street
Chicago, Illinois
[...]
*Candidates will be notified of the session to which they are assigned."

I'd be curious of learning if/when ya'll receive a letter with your session assignment - and I'll obviously share the same.

In 2013 they had a second round downtown around the Xmas holiday for the people who couldn't make the second.

Just to confirm -- you do not pay the $50 fee if you are not participating in the ceremony?
That's at least how I interpreted the letter saying that I passed/instructions for swearing in.

NonTrad -- do you recall when you made the $50 payment and/or received your letter?
Believe I sent in my payment Saturday, 4/1 -- though have yet to receive the letter. (I'm aware this is unnecessary hand-wringing on my part, but want to take all necessary precautions).

I paid the same day as bar results and the letter came via email April 5.

I would confirm that through your processor rather than assume. Other jurisdictions require a per-court processing fee. That may be what this $50 represents, independent of the ceremony.

You have to pay the fee.

Gotcha, thanks. Apparently, the Board sent my certification to the Clerk's office last Monday, though still waiting on the Clerk's email with a ceremony assignment. Clearly making me work even for the administrative elements of this process hah.

Apparently there is a way to take the oath out of state, but they won't tell us how until after May 4. That's what my processor told me.

Every state is different, but usually you need to petition to your state supreme court first. The supreme court then will confer the jurisdiction to that out of state judge or person, then you can take oath with that judge or person.

if I started a temporary job (doing document reviews), do I still need to add that to my bar application? even if I've already gotten swearing in info?

Confirmed: pay the $50 regardless of whether you will be attending the actual swearing in ceremony.
They also won't say much about those who cannot attend swearing in other than wait for a letter after May 4 after they determine who attended and who did not.
