How hard should I study for 2nd exam? (NY, Feb '17)

Post by ThinkNegative » Tue Jan 24, 2017 6:21 pm

Hi. I'm taking the NY bar in February. I probably should've started studying earlier, but here we are. How screwed am I / how hard should I study in the coming weeks? Possibly relevant datapoints:
  • I took and passed the Georgia bar exam in July 2016. Studied hard with Kaplan for a month, after two weeks of half-assing it; scored ~160 MBE, ~315 total, out of 270 required to pass. (Edit: Georgia = MBE + MPT + "four "Georgia essays"; I lucked out in that all four were on topics I like, a bit of luck that I can't count on being repeated.)
  • I've got Kaplan books + Critical Pass flash cards for NY, and I work full time.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!

There's always exceptions, of course, but knock out a solid MBE and it should carry you.

Put 0 effort into studying for the NY multiple choice. It's stupid hard and everyone tanks it so don't lose any sleep over it.

You will have to know some NY-specific stuff for the essays, so do dedicate some time to them, but in a triage of time focus on the areas that are NY-only (non-mbe topics like family law, trusts, etc.) so you don't pull an essay that you literally know nothing about.

For the essays, take the extra few minutes to format them with headers, underlining, etc.

God speed! It's just another stupid licensing exam, knock that sucker out.
NY has adopted the UBE. There will not be any NY multiple choice or essays on NY law.
