In many states registration is required this month.

Only Alabama has a final registration deadline this month (sort of: Feb 1). Every other state where the first filing deadline has passed or will in the next thirty days (of which there are fewer than a dozen) has a late filing deadline OP can meet.

I booked mine for the VA bar a year ago today, and all the decent hotels were already full.

I lucked out because a new hotel had just started accepting reservations.

Concerning CA takers, registration for the July exam is not available until the first week of March. The state bar registration and moral character determination are things you could knock out right now though.
