Has anyone used Barmax as a course to take the bar instead of Barbri/Kaplan/Themis? I'm thinking about doing it for NY but not sure if it's worth it. I know people who've used it for questions but not as their main study tactic. I'd appreciate any thoughts!

I took Marino for New York and loved it. I highly suggest giving them a look. http://marinolegal.com/

I took barmax NY for July 2014. I'm a foreign lawyer and it was my first attempt and I passed (MBE 150). It was the only course I used, although I did read the free stuff on seperac, and using that advice created my own "master list" of essay subjects using the free list published by smartbarprep. I thought barmax was great in that it was v flexible, could study anywhere (and I did - in parks, in libraries, in coffee shops) and anywhere (which was important to me as I was on maternity leave at the time so had baby and toddler to work around). The approach is basically to teach you exactly what you need to know, and nothing more. I haven't done barbri but as I understand it, their approach is to teach you ALL the law and then hope you remember enough of it. Barmax doesn't try to do that, it just tries to get you through the exam. The lectures are extremely dull - just reading the outlines out loud, basically - but quite useful just as something to listen to when you're half-doing something else, as a way to drill some of the concepts in. The best thing was that the MBE questions are all real. For me, as a foreign lawyer, the whole multiple choice thing was what I felt least comfortable with and I really didn't want to practice questions that may not have been reflective of the real ones. I felt like the questions I saw on the exam were very similar to the ones I had been studying. The course includes 2 personal essay gradings (and you can buy more if you want). I actually only did one, I probably should have done at least one other but I felt a lot more confident with the essays. The feedback was helpful, though, and I think you could get a lot out of it.
In general - highly recommended. Not worth spending lots more on a course that will get you the same result (and will probably make you work a lot harder to get there).
