Have people gotten dean's list emails yet?

I got a letter today. Snail mail. I heard from a reputable source the cutoff was a 3.67.

WTF?

What would be top 20% gpa then?

Also how does this make sense?

top 10% gpa was a 3.81. Top 30% being a 3.67 makes NO SENSE.

top 10% was a 3.81 for the 1L class. 3.67 was top 30% for the entire school.

Well it's probably a bit below a 3.5, but I can't see 3.67 = top 30%, and 3.81 = top 10% unless median is at least a 3.5.

I have a bit of trouble believing that the CSO is telling firms that our median is 3.35 when it is really 3.5 or above. Or we just have great career services? Maybe OCI goes so well because 85% of us are above median?

Ok this isn't that hard. It is a 3.5 or BELOW. It was a 3.42 ish for the 1L class.

Firms may not care, or they may not look that hard. It would be nearly impossible for them to know the true curve, and because of the limited number of interview slots, they can only see as many top students as they'd normally see, anyway. So from the firm's perspective, nothing really has changed.

Ah, good point. That was probably the cutoff for rising 3Ls. I didn't think the 3.67 number made sense, either. With the mean at 3.42 and 3.81 top 10%, the cutoff should be something more like a 3.58.

Ah, good point. That was probably the cutoff for rising 3Ls. I didn't think the 3.67 number made sense, either. With the mean at 3.42 and 3.81 top 10%, the cutoff should be something more like a 3.64.

The cutoff isn't a 3.58 spring semester. I know someone with a 3.6 who didn't make dean's list. I'm guessing it's at least a 3.61, which means our median is at least a 3.48ish using normal distribution.

Median isn't the relevant number for a normal distribution, but yah. I back of the enveloped a 3.42 using the stats book in the fall, but it could easily have been much higher in the spring. For what it's worth, last year it was closer to a 3.47.

It's Cornell's way of keeping up with its peers. Basically all of the other T14s pad GPAs in other ways but I'm not sure why Cornell doesn't just follow their systems. Most of the other T14s either (1) include LLMs on the curve (and the LLMs basically uniformally and without fail eat up the bottom of the curve thus inflating the JD rank) or (2) do not enforce curves in classes under 40 people (such that JDs can basically ensure that they opt for classes that will award solely As).

I doubt the mean is 3.5. I was a 3L when they made the grade change and, at least at that time, many professors didn't act on the leniency of the new curve. Plus, to be fair, the new curve allows you to go under a 3.35 mean. And I don't think Cornell is explicitly saying that the median is 3.35, it's just saying that 3.35 is the aspirational median (and the one which at least some professors continue to enforce). 3.35 is probably an inaccurate, but fairly close estimate.

ETA: For frame of reference, my year (2011) top 30% was a 3.52, I think. The year before me top 30% was a 3.48.

Have any of you lived/heard/know of anyone living in one of these places: collegetown center, court, plaza, 407 college ave? I've never visited Ithaca and will be leasing an apt without being able to see it for real, so wanted to gather as many opinions as I can before signing off a lease. The landlord mentioned that collegetown center is known to be the quieter building and is located in a quieter area among the three, but it is located right next to plaza, so not sure how that works. Anyways, would love to hear anything about these 4 places I'm looking into!!

I put my address for insurance and all registration at my parents' house out of state. Saves $$$$$$.
