Aside from WE, how many internships should a law student do prior and after to law school?

Post by lawschoolsplit2023 » Thu Feb 02, 2023 10:21 am

I am preparing to apply for law school Fall 2024. Have taken the lsat and done well. Am planning for the next year and a half to prepare. In addition to valuable work experience how many pre-law school matriculation internships do students do? And also while in law school, aside from summer associate and clerkships?

You should take jobs (or internships) that you find interesting and that you can make work financially. There is no prescribed way to go about this, and you should not be taking jobs solely to craft a "narrative" for law school applications. Your life's narrative is far more interesting if it's genuine.

Prior: any responsible job that makes you not a KJD is good. Try to get a regular job as opposed to a bunch of internships.

During: both summers. First summer just any legal job to get legal experience, second summer should be geared towards a post-grad offer. You can also to an internship during the semester but it's really not required 9I did but mainly for the cash).

For your time in law school, I think doing as many internships as you can during the school year is actually really helpful. But it depends a little where you go and what your goals are - if you’re at a T14 and want biglaw, school-year internships are probably less pressing. If you’re at a school with weaker employment stats and/or want to do something more specialized (PI, social justice, criminal defense etc), and/or you’re going to practice in that market, getting more experience and more connections is always helpful. (Plus getting credit for jobs can be much more interesting than sitting in classes.)
