How important are Vault rankings when choosing a law firm, especially in secondary legal markets? How high on the list is considered “prestigious?”

Vault rankings are only really useful for NYC transactional work. W/r/t how high up is considered prestigious, that's one of those questions that creates 40 pages threads on TLS and provides no meaningful results. Almost everyone has a different definition of prestige. For some, it's V10. For others, it's specific firms that don't fall in any readily available V# category. For others, it could be V100. Etc. Regardless, you're in a secondary market, so you should disregard them for the most part. Ask local attorneys what strong firms are and rely on Chambers and Partners and the type of work that the firm lists that it's doing on its website.Denlaw123 wrote:How important are Vault rankings when choosing a law firm, especially in secondary legal markets? Yeah, except that OP's looking at secondary markets. Going by Vault could yield disastrous results.Redamon1 wrote:A good place to start if you know nothing about big law before OCI (I didn't) but, IMO, no basis to pick one firm over another once you have several offers from firms in the top, say 25-50. At that point, dig into the practice areas, talk to attorneys, and see what firm makes the most sense for your career goals and personality.
