When firms ask how much you expect for a fall/summer internship how do you respond. I've been saying I'm flexible/value the experience more. Is this bad? Should I just give an amount.

I think you should definitely give an amount. Do you know anyone else who has done internships at this/other firms that you can ask to get an idea of what they make?

Use glassdoor to look up starting salaries, and ask for that prorated over how much work you're doing. If it's 20 hours a week, and the starting salary is 52k, ask for 500 a week and let them bargain you down. Assuming this is a small firm, it's probably bad to look like you're easy to take advantage of financially, because you'll be expected to bring in business sooner rather than later. If they reject you just for asking for a reasonable salary, you probably don't want to work there anyway.

You don't honestly expect a small firm to pay an intern at the starting salary rate do you? I know biglaw does it but that's a recruiting fee more than a salary.
