Do good work; don't be weird; get good grades once in law school.

Agree with this.
OP: don't try too hard to impress. Your attitude should be: "This is a cool opportunity to learn something and get some perspective before I start law school." If your approach is "how can I leverage this into a SA position?", the effect will likely be the opposite of what you're hoping for.

Your goal should not be to leverage this into a summer associate position because that likely will not happen. Your goal should be to leverage this position into an interview for a summer associate position down the road.
As others have said, the best way to do so is probably not to do anything crazy. Just be sociable, positive, and do good work.

No. Just to do high-quality work on the things he does give you.
Not to demean the importance of your internship, but no big law partner is going to give any substantive work, let alone a lot of substantive work, to a 0L. As you probably realize, he's doing you and/or your "connection" a favor by hiring you for the summer.
Again, treat this like a good opportunity to learn about law firm life; don't treat it like a "I'm gong to try to impress everyone with killer analytical skills!" thing.
