I am a 0L who will be starting school in August. I plan on taking the patent bar exam prior to school, so I was wondering what the best options are in terms of preparation?

I am considering OmniPrep - cheap, online, self-dependent. I know a course like PLI would be best but I'm not willing to drop $2K on a course.

Any info anyone has would be appreciated.

I shelled out the cash for PLI. I read that Omniprep is outdated. They have plenty of questions for the old content but hasnt been updated ina long time. That being said, I heard that you can pass the test by just studying previous exams and understanding what you got wrong.

The patent bar material is quite boring so I enjoy the PLI course. In my eyes, if I can secure a 1L SA or a patent agent gig during 1L summer it would pay for itself.

I would try to get PLI... It's pretty much said to be the Gold Standard for prepping for the Patent Bar. I managed to get a hold of a friend's materials a few years ago when I took it, but that would also be out of date now since they test the AIA hard nowadays from what I hear.

One thing I would stress is to not listen to anyone who says that they passed by only looking at MyPatentBar... If they did, then kudos to them, but I've heard about too many people going down this road and it not working out. You may have been able to do it years ago when the community was bigger and more active, but nowadays it's not frequently used or updated.

PLI is the best. I did their in-person class, which also comes with access to all online materials. It is the most entertaining patent bar review content available.

However, ~50% of the exam is repeat questions (I know this because I took the exam twice, and even reviewed my first exam results at the USPTO). The best thing you can do is memorize repeat questions on mypatentbar.com. That is by far the best free resource. Keep in mind that many of the answers are incorrect, and often the correct answer is found and explained in the comments. If I had memorized more of the questions on mypatentbar.com from the start, I would have passed the exam on my first attempt.

This. Use MyPatentBar as a supplement... I will say that it is good for that. I pretty much did the course and then went through the old exams on MPB, answering the questions, but knowing that every one of the practice exams on their was from before the started to implement the AIA into the test, so YMMV.

Also: When you get closer to your test day, get comfortable with searching the PDF copy of the MPEP... The testing center I took it at had a super old version of Adobe, but knowing how and where to look for certain topics is a huge help, given that I looked up about 25%-35% of the questions on test day.

Thanks for the feedback, this is great. So if I'm stubborn and still don't do PLI, best bet might be purchasing s review book (Watts, etc) and studying the heck out of past exams?

I took PRG pre-AIA and it was very good, but i can't comment on how well they've updated the materials.

Anyone else have any info on OmniPrep?
