What does a typical 2L year look like?

Hi guys! I'm looking for comments from 2L students and beyond...

What does a typical 2L day and year look like? There are so many posts about 1L, and what that should look like/how to be successful. But I was wondering what a 2L year should consist of. I am a 0L, but I am curious because as I try and pick a final school, I would like to know what it takes to be successful in your 2L so I can look for those things, and possibly ask questions about them at upcoming ASD. (externships? Internships? Part time jobs?) etc.

And how many things should you be involved in?

Thanks guys!

Pretty much everyone I know here at GULC does an externship at an agency at least one of the two semesters. It's pretty easy to get a M/W or T/TH heavy schedule and work the other days. This might be unique to DC tho because there's just so many (unpaid) opportunities.

It sucks at times because it turns into a pretty full week. However, classes also tend to be easier because you can find a seminar or two that take significantly less work to get a decent grade. It's also worked out for me because I'm strictly a cram-at-the-end-of-the-semester student for doctrinal's (real upper level classes like Corporations, Evidence, etc.).

From what I've seen, lots of brewdogs with some PS4 mixed in. Occasional poker trips/benders.

Lots more freedom to do school/school-related stuff if that's your thing too

Yeah, I find that class is the least of my worries 95% of the time. I get the work done, but most of my time is spent doing other law-related things, be it organizations, journals, advocacy, applications for whatever, etc. I'm way busier this year, but it's much more enjoyable because it's stuff I wanna do.

As I'm sure you've heard by now, 2L is generally considered the year that you are "worked to death." This isn't really that far off the mark. I would say that, assuming you are a student who undergoes OCI and gets an SA offer sometime in the first half of fall semester 2L, then I would say there are 4 different paths you can take:

1. Gunner 2.0 - these people are generally clerkship-bound, or clerkship-oriented. They will take a lot more doctrinal courses, work really hard on journal to try and get that senior board spot, and/or probably compete in moot court. For these people, the time commitment and stress of 1L doesn't end.
2. College 2.0 - these people will get involved in a ton of student groups, organize panels and guest speakers, etc. Not necessary the most ambitious or best students, but usually the more social kinds, from what I've found. They'll tend to take on too many different activities and get overscheduled at inconvenient points during the semester, despite knowing full-well that was a possibility.
3. Purposefully Studious - some people have a path they really want to study, and so they take every class in this area. They probably aren't that involved in other activities, but generally their ambitions/GPAs seem to overlap with the gunner-types. The majority of students tend to take this path.
4. 2LOL - starting 3L's drink-yourself-to-death lifestyle a little early.
