Top Law Schools

If you want to be a lawyer, I'd stay and focus on getting my grades up next semester. If your grades stay in the same ballpark after next semester, you can reassess and decide whether it's prudent to cut your losses.

at 0 debt, Id stay probably. theres not really much of a correlation between grades and getting a job outside of biglaw.

I think I should be able to get B's in the other 3. The two classes I got C+'s in, I knew I did terrible on the exam walking out, the other 3 I'm more optimistic about. If 0 debt after all 3 years, then stay. Just work a bit harder.

Don't drop out. If you aren't gunning for big law, I wouldn't even worry too much about your grades. Focus on taking bar exam related courses and networking for a job.

$0 debt is greater than any "A."

From what you've briefly said, dropping shouldn't even be on the table. This is the case even if you get 3 more C+s.

Thanks for the responses so far. It seems like you guys are saying I shouldn't drop b/c I won't have any debt. But do I have a realistic shot at getting a job from SMU with a 2.x gpa? Got a 4th grade (B-)

probably not but if you hustle hard and make connections maybe an employer would be willing to take a chance on you. Absent that, your odds of employment at graduation are probably slim with those grades. You could also go solo and/or pair with some other grads. I guess it all depends on how much you want to be a lawyer (opportunity cost of staying in school). If you want to be a lawyer and don't care whether you have to go out on your own at the start, i'd stay

yea of course. half the students i graduated with in much worse times than now got jobs from a much shittier law school with 2.x gpas. it's fine. chill.

So pump up your GPA with a bunch of seminar classes/clinics 2L and 3L - but really, your future employers are really not going to care very much.

If you want to be a lawyer, stay.

So small firms/local govt will overlook terrible grades? I see other threads on here where people are encouraging someone to drop because of bad grades, is this only for the big law or bust types?

Sounds like you really want to drop out, so I would drop out

If you want to be a lawyer and have no/little debt then it's probably fine to stick it out, once you get outside of the grade-conscious employers I don't think they're going to care much what your GPA is. It'll be down to more how well you hustle, how much people like you, etc.

It's not that I want to drop. I just don't want to waste my parent's money if the chances of me getting a job are slim b/c of my grades. Also I really expected to do a lot better so I'm a bit shocked right now and not sure I can do much to improve next semester.

Your chances aren't particularly good but if you're willing to put in the work hopefully you'll find something

I wasn't too excited about law school when I first stared but I do actually enjoy it now and am looking forward to becoming an attorney. I'm just scared as shit about not being able to get a job

Didn't you post stuff about not studying much, though? Lots of people need a semester to figure out how law school exams work, and can improve a lot by the second semester. I would definitely talk to your profs about what happened with your exams.

Okay, thanks for the responses. I'll schedule meetings with my professors this week and see what went wrong. Turns out I got a B+ in one class so that was nice.

I probably did slack off some this semester, I guess that was a pretty fucking stupid thing to do. Looks like I'll end up around a 2.8. Definitely planning to change up the routine for second semester.

Can your parents afford the cost of sending you to school? If so, I guess stay if you want to be a lawyer. You don't sound that excited about it. Do you know anything about what actual practice is like? Why did you decide to go to law school in the first place?

If it's a hardship on your family, I would think hard about whether this is the best way to spend their money.

Just to be clear, I said definitely drop out because I don't think much has changed from this back when the OP made this same thread at the beginning of the semester:
