Just wanted to start a beverage thread of what everyone will be drinking and relaxing on this holiday and weekend that gives us either a break from school or our job.

I'll start:
Thanksgiving day I tend to drink mostly wine. I'll probably switch over to gin and tonics towards the end of the night.

I haven't figured out the drink menu for this weekend though. I'm open to suggestions! I'll probably stick with my latest phase of unfiltered wheat beer and Hefeweizen.

What are you drinking?

Was literally just talking to the SO about Gewurtztraminer, which I know nothing about aside from how to pronounce it.

Don't blame you for sticking to a red if you've already started, but you should check out the Gerwurztraminer sometime. It is an excellent variety. It is very good chilled to have alone, or with a appetizer snack. Wouldn't want to drink an entire bottle in one sitting, or with a hearty meal, but a great bottle to have at home in the fridge. It's an excellent socializing wine.

It was a little tannin-heavy and could have used more time to breathe before dinner.

Awesome! I will have to try it with some spicy Asian food. I'm a huge fan of Thai but haven't thought of trying it with Gerwurztraminer.
Any particular Gerwurztraminer you prefer?

unfortunately i'm not fancy enough to give you any particular one. viognier is also always a crowdpleaser IMO.

Funny, the wine I picked out to bring up to my parents' tomorrow is a gerwurz. Great afternoon snacking wine.

Alsatian Gewurtztraminer is actually a great turkey wine. High acid, good body. Reds are hard to pair with thanksgiving, even though everyone seems to drink Pinot noir

I'm not that fancy either. That's why I was looking for suggestions. My favorite wines are the bottles on sale.

I'll have to check that one out. Reds are very hard to pair with thanksgiving, and I'm not sure why each Thanksgiving I go to seems to randomly pick a red for that meal.

This year with dinner they served a red blend (83% Cabernet with splashes of Malbec, Tinta Cão, Tempranillo and Petit Verdot-- whatever these are?). It was a great stand alone wine. It paired ok with the food, but it made me wonder, what exactly is the best wine to pair with turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes?

I'm of the opinion that full-bodied red wines do not go well with Thanksgiving food. If you must go with reds, I'd do something lighter and less likely to overwhelm the food since you'll be eating and drinking lots. Pinot noir fits the bill, but cheap pinot can really be hit or miss. Barbera and dolcetto are affordable, enjoyable reds that go well with food.

Rosé wines also pair nicely with Turkey and cranberry; on the off chance that your local wine store carries something from Bandol or Tavel, give those a try.

For whites, a little sweetness works well here and helps you chow down; Vouvray (which is really chenin blanc), gewurztraminer, riesling (Alsatian or German; German ones tend to have lower alcohol % and higher level of sweetness), or pinot gris (Alsace again, but I've recently had some delicious Oregon pinot gris too).

No worries. It is just difficult to comprehend, after consuming a large amount of cheap wine, that someone is sitting in front or their lap top drinking a glass of milk.

Carlo Rossi wine doesn't taste great. After your fourth glass it loses its flavor and just tastes dry.
