Top Law Schools

The devil is alive. I never wavered so much in my life.

I currently work at a great job. I have 401k, a pension, great health benefits and no one gets laid off (no joke on this last point). Everyone at my job is great. I'm a recent grad and make a decent salary. I feel I am blessed.

The department I work in is finance. I work directly under the CFO. I want to have a meeting with him to see if there is any growth potential within the department and does he see me becoming a greater asset to a specific area, where I can learn, grow and develop a career. I heard finance is one of the "it" departments to be in.

This sounds great, but I am a little hesitant to even appreciate same if granted the opportunity. I've always wanted to be a lawyer, since I was a small child. I really want to be a tax lawyer (for the money) but my passion is AUSA.

My main concern is the LSAT, I fear if I retake, which is what I currently plan on doing, I may not do better than I previously did. I may not get enough scholarship money and I'll be in school for 3 years with no income. I'm currently saving, at max, 2k a month. I have no rent or bills (besides phone/credit cards/small student loan). Another concern is that, while in UG I was a very good student, but I spent a lot of time to my self. I feared that if I ventured out or explored other options, I would be distracted from my studies. Therefore, I didn't explore my options/interests and likes. My social life was decent/mediocre. I feel, if I attend LS, I will be back in that mode and unable to pursue what I like and don't like. However, I do want to make friends in LS and I believe a social life is possible, but I'm so nutty.

Do you guys think its beneficial, if I attempt to work my way up within the company I currently work for or just go to law school?

The positive about law school to me, is that it gives me a chance to pursue my passion. If I attend a top school, in 3 years I'll be making way more theoretically than I would be if I stayed within the company, unless I know how to network and I move up quicker.


*** I KNOW I DO THIS A LOT. I MAKE A LOT OF THREADS ON IS LS WORTH IT/ HOW BAD IS THE MARKET? ETC... ITS BECAUSE OF THIS BACKSTORY. I'M NOT 100% AND I FEEL LIKE I SHOULD JUST STICK WITH LS, BECAUSE IT WAS MY ORIGINAL PLAN AND TO BACK TRACK, I WOULD FEEL LIKE A FAILURE.

Why not stay put while studying for the LSAT & applying to law schools to see what your actual options are ?

This is an option, the option that I am currently undertaking. However, I am putting the horse before the cart. I'm assuming if my boss sees growth potential and places me in a department/career path, I would be unable to focus entirely on the LSAT, because my workload would substantially increase.

I feel at 22, I should on some sort of career path.

Changing a plan is not back tracking or failing.

Lots of people change career plans waaayyyyy later than 22.

Have you considered pursuing an MBA degree ? Depending upon your location, there are some outstanding part-time programs & many employers reimburse tuition & books.

Any interest in getting a CPA designation or other financial profession degree/certification ?

This is true, but my mother, who I adore, admire and always try my best to listen to would say: you need to stay focus. Do not back track and falter.

She also is one of the people you discussed in my other thread regarding erroneous perceptions about lawyer, the market, and their abilities.
My mom feels that lawyers can maneuver to various other positions

But not going to law school isn't back tracking. It's reevaluating your options. Focusing on the wrong thing for the sake of focusing isn't helpful.

Also I think your mother is wrong about using law took get other positions.

There is no way you know what you want at 22, especially if the only job you have ever had is a 9-5 corp finance job. Wait a few years and acquire better lsat.

I don't have a fiance background. I have a liberal arts background. I was just blessed to get my foot in the door through the CFO.

I have no accounting experience so no. I'm not a fan of accounting. I'm more align to Financial Analyst or Investments. However, I always here how important it is to be an accountant.

I'm exactly very similar to you OP except in IT. I've been advancing both paths (studying LSAT / learning IT) so I don't leave behind either

I think Johann might have some bad blood with biglaw. biglaw may be working him/her too hard, shitty, etc.

ETA: a lot of ppl seem to think negative of biglaw. This may be a reason to not go to law school (if you are conviced that biglaw is not for you).

Dear god...OP, with that spelling please do yourself a favor and stay in finance.

biglaw fucking sucks. do you like working on weekends? do you like being "available" on vacations? do you like having 6 am and 9 pm calls because your client is on a different coast/somewhere in the world and does not care about you. do you like getting emails at 6pm about what needs to be done that day? do you like being told on tuesday at 5 pm you have to work travel the next day? cause all of that happens. you also forget anniversaries and then your SO is mad. your SO knows you make a lot of money so you have to do nice things (nice dinners, nicer gifts, nice living places), which is fun but sorta not when the only thing on your mind is saving up a lot of money to go do something, anything else. i check my bank account daily just thinking "do i have enough money saved up yet to convince my SO that a career change is feasible and we will be ok?"

and if you don't like biglaw, your career is financially better than the other law jobs.
