A OL asks current students and graduates:

In addition to having good grades, how does one go about laying the groundwork for a sector- or practice- specific 1L SA job? For example, should one try to cultivate stronger relationships with relevant 1L instructors, make inquiries at target firms throughout the school year, express an interest in a firm's X practice, etc? If a student is interested in, say, energy or corporate or con law but lacks professional experience, how would they go about convincing a firm to take them on as an SA. Or is this not the nature of 1L SAs at all?

1) Be a URM, preferably at CCN with at least median grades; and/or 2) have really good work experience and be very high in your class at a T14; or 3) have ties to a southern market or Texas and get a 1L SA there
