Is it just me or does "The Paperchase" the movie show examples of succeeding in law school? For instance, while in class the students answer Kingsfield's questions in a manner of applying the rule to the fact pattern in the cases read while inconsequentially shaping their minds for the exam. I remember a scene where Brooks states something along the lines of "I couldn't put together a hypothetical for my life. I'm great at memorizing all the facts of each case though." It appears that this is a classic example of focusing on the minuate details of cases and not getting the broader picture. Idk but I feel like "The Paperchase is really good 0L prep lol

Stop trying to find the magic key to success. You have to go to law school and see what happens like everyone else does.

But you shouldn't be watching it for pointers on how to succeed in law school.

Except the professor's daughter's not going to get you a job anywhere these days. Unless the professor is a biglaw partner adjuncting at your school, I suppose.

It won best supporting actor, which is a travesty considering that there were legitimately all time great movies that same year (Badlands, The Exorcist, The Spirit of the Beehive, Day for Night, Armacord, American Graffiti, The Sting and The Mother and the Whore). Now the public assumes all 70s movies blow.

I mean, John Houseman fucking kills it and it's not like it won Best Picture or Director or something implying it's actually the best movie of the year. Also the 1970s are almost universally considered the golden age of cinema so no, people don't think 70s movies suck. Paperchase is no where near seen enough (or bad enough) to affect people's feelings about the 70s.

He was good. I personally think it's a terrible movie (1 star). The whole movie is so contrived and bland. We have the self-righteous law student with the ugly stache who falls in love with the professor's daughter who was previously engaged to another student, and is mad that law school takes away the students' focus from banging her. You've got the drama of the "I need the grades" but for what? They're at Harvard Law in 1973. They're all good. You've got the we don't really see them study, but see a montage leading to success. You've got the melodrama of the guy attempting suicide because he just can't apply to law to fact. It's basically a movie resorting to unrealistic melodrama because the actual premise itself lacks real drama. The movie's entire popularity is linked to the fact there's no other movies on 1L. Honestly, just setting it in a TTT where it's 1 in 10 gets a job would immediately make for a better story.

To be fair, the majority of movies from the 1970's did blow.

Isn't the paperchase a movie about the difficulties and horrors of 1L... while at the same time, people as young as our law school heroes were dying in Vietnam?

I loved the Paper Chase, probably because I want to go to law scool, but my family hated it. I had watched it on m own, thought it was great, and then I tried to get them to watch it. My dad fell asleep halfway through it, and my brother got up 1 hour in, said "this f__king movie sucks," and walked out. lol

I think it's only appealing to law students. My gf fell asleep 20 min in lol

What did you mean by the phrase "inconsequentially shaping their minds for the exam?" I enjoyed the movie, but found the wording of your question a bit confusing.

(Not a personal critique here, by the way. Just wanting to let you know how your question reads. :) )

I wanted to fall asleep 20 mins in. But in all honesty: it's a fine movie but I actually appreciated it more after a semester of law school than before going.

It's also not representative of law school. I know the whole socratic method and cold calling system has been going on for decades, but this is not representative of a law school experience, even if there is a fair amount of suffering in the movie (like 1L).

It'd be better if they took out the whole love story with the professor's daughter. It was so clearly a lazy devise to add suspense that it made the underlying story feel terribly fake. A story about 1L could 100% be exciting without resorting to such garbage. Look at Boiler Room, the Wolf of Wall Street, etc. None of these stories are sexy on their own, but they put realistic characters in realistic but interesting situations.

If you think 1L is exciting, you should check your pulse.
