I don't think there are good numbers on it. I would guess that most go to another firm. A fair amount go in house or leave the profession. Some go into government or to a nonprofit.

that guy sounds like he sucks. lit type work is tougher to jump from to another industry post law and to be honest, what was he doing if he was practicing for eight years and made no useful contacts? long gone are the days of skating by, doing minimal work and keeping your head down and not being looked at as redundant. And what kind of loan repayment was he doing?

the industry is bad, but these bullshit sob stories don't help the case

Compassion is a useful human quality. You demonstrate none of it. Also, since the whole point of the e-mail and the blog post and the other posts it links to is that this is a frighteningly normal experience for many biglaw lawyers after a certain point in their career, I'm not confident about your reading comprehension, either.

the backroom drafting guy was destined to fail out, so no surprise. it's called being proactive about your career, not completely reactive to the (probably not so) surprising layoffs.

He left in 2010, right when things got bad. You can't really say he tried to "skate by" or whatever without knowing the type of work he did or how he did it. Law was drastically different when he was a midlevel compared to when he got pushed out, but that aside, you really have no basis for criticizing him or thinking you can survive eight years just grinding it out.

More importantly, you seemed to miss the part where there are a multitude of people who have similar stories to him. But it's cool, keep thinking you're the special snowflake. TLS is so quick to criticize people at bad schools who think they'll be special but so many people seem so quick to think that it's not the case with them.

But, you know, if you just hustle and work really hard, it'll be okay. Just do go to the multitude of client facing events you'll have invitations to and keep up with opposing counsel and your law school buddies. It's really not even work when you think about it.

Yeah man, every profession is just like Big Law where your first job has no security and you'll never make as much money again.

what is this mythical job security that gets bandied about? are you a salaried worked from the 50s?

like i said before, be proactive. if you're not meeting clients or seeing exit ops, then start looking on your own for opportunities that have that.
