How do you go about finding 1L positions within corporations? Is it through simplicity or do you have to search for them like you search for law firm internships?
Actually, do corporations do 2L internships also? How would you go about finding those?

I emailed the general counsel of the one I'm at this summer. I looked up the email address with some creative googling, since it wasn't listed. Some companies have a formal application process, and some use OCI. You kind of have to figure it out on a case by case basis.
You don't want a 2l in house position. 99.9999999% of companies won't hire straight out of law school.

The hiring timelines are really going to vary. I got mine in January, while my friend got his literally a week before Spring Finals.

I got a call to come in for an interview for an in house 1L position during finals week (2 or 3rd week of May), after applying through Symplicity in late January. At least at my school, there were 1L in-house positions posted about once a week from early December to late April.
CSO also compiled a list of companies that were regularly hiring 1Ls across the country, but this was not updated too frequently and I think a lot of the contacts were wrong or outdated. I feel like self-initiated networking is the way to go, especially for smaller companies or companies without a history (at least as far as you can tell) of hiring legal interns

I interviewed the Monday after spring finals and got the offer on Thursday. I could have started as early as the following Monday, but I had a three-week gig lined up.

I applied in Jan did a Skype interview ( 1L in house was in my home market) in March and got the job around finals time. Having applied for a bunch of in-house gigs, I got the impression that companies didn't really start thinking about filling summer positions until - well - the summer.

I got mine by emailing the GC in December. Send out tons of personalized messages expressing genuine interest in the company and see what happens. Most don't care about grades at all, FYI.

Had two interviews for 1L in-house. One I applied directly on the website, the other (where I'm at now) the posting got referenced to me from Career Services, but this was the only instance of this happening.
Basically, start checking indeed.com and the careers pages of places you want to work for around late January, and keep at it. Hiring a summer intern generally isn't a priority thing, so depts might not get around to it until later. The place I'm at interviewed me during write-on week.
Do you have a background that you could align with an in-house corp? Both of my interviews were at tech companies.

I dunno if it's still going to be active next year, but there were a lot of leads for in-house summer gigs at
http://lawstudentjobs.net/, if you filter by "1L." I did get a few interviews from looking at that site. HTH.

I got my interview in April. But I was hustling for a job starting in December, and I started talking to any attorney who would listen before I started school. It takes a while, but networking really does pay off. I'm not talking about job fairs, more just meeting with anyone who's willing one on one. 95% of them are a waste of time, but you only need one.
