Alumni networking events

I know it's a broad question, but how do these events go? All I got out of my school is that it's business formal and there is free beer/wine.
You show up. Eat hors’devours. Have a beer or a glass of wine. If you’re feeling crazy you’ll even drink some water. You’ll chat with alum from years past about bullshit like “Hey did you catch the NBA finals?” or “What about this weather today?” You’ll probably meet new people and they’ll give you a 5 minute explanation of what sort of work they’ve been doing recently. And then you’ll leave.
Have you never left the house before?
