In patents they are weird backwards apostrophes. How do I do this in word or windows.

In Word, if you hit the single-quote key twice in a row, you'll get one apostrophe facing one way, and the other facing the other way (and inverted). Then you can just delete the one you don't want.
Unless the character you need is identical to the one in the thread title, but facing the other way and not inverted. In that case, I have no idea.

Desert Fox, have you looked in the Insert Symbol menu? I think it should be there.

I've been yelled at by a few partners for this before.
Super edit: looks like the only way to get the straight apostrophe before the patent number is to insert it via the insert symbol function as mentioned or by unchecking the "Straight quotes" with “smart quotes” box in your Autocorrect options. Pain in the ass.

Go to insert symbol, then create a keyboard shortcut for character 0027 (apostrophe)

Doesn't work unless you uncheck the "Straight quotes" with “smart quotes” box in the Proofing -> Autocorrect options -> Autoformat as you type settings. Otherwise it will still auto-format the straight apostrophe to be curved.

This is the right place to ask your questions about Microsoft Word etc:

They get fake internet points for answering, so they answer promptly.

Type 2019 then alt-X if you want the single close quote. Otherwise, remove smart quotes, as someone else said. If you are doing this a lot for one particular day, do it once and then follow that with
alt-I . . . s . . . enter . . . enter
If you'll be using it for a long period of time, make a shortcut key.
