Free Food in Law School?

Could current law school students comment on the 'free' food situation at their various institutions? At a few of the admitted student days that I attended, a lot of the students said there are a lot of events where food is being given out, just wondering how this is across the board (specifically at NYU/Columbia) if you could comment.

Tons of free food. At my school you could, probably literally, get a free lunch every single school day from the 1st day of class until the end of classes. Food varies widely in quality though.

Same here. It's great, but pizza everyday can get old...

Yeah it's pretty close to everyday here, but the food is almost always pizza or sandwiches. Plus you often have to sit through some boring speech or panel or something.

Do I have to sit through the entire panel?

WTF? Boring speech? A ton of the panels and speeches would be absolutely amazing. It's not uncommon for the top schools to have Supreme Court justices, famous scholars and trial lawyers, politicians, etc. I think that's pretty badass.
I go to a lowly ttt15 so we have yet to have a Supreme Court justice speak here. Sure some of them are interesting, but others are, for example, a presentation about the exciting field of animal law.

And sometimes you are just busy too. But I do think it is poor etiquette to grab food and not stay for the presentation/talk.

Sometimes you have to pick between going to a panel you're interested in where you'd have to eat pizza for the 5th time that week, or a panel you don't give a shit about that's offering awesome food. It's rough man.

If you speak with NU please tell them you will only come here if they stop serving Connies. If enough potential admits say this, maybe they will listen.

I think you'd be surprised by how uncommon this actually is. At top schools most talks are corporate lawyers from NYC discussing their deals or academics talking about obscure areas of law.

Don't most people just skip the talk on complex cross-border railroad litigation or whatever and sweep in for the leftover pizza after?

I grab food, read for my next class, and sort of pay attention to the panel or speaker. If you go to a Lexis/Westlaw/Bloomberg lunch (the three major legal research platforms), you'll get other stuff like water bottles and bags.

My only complaint is that I wish the panelists would eat too. It's weird when you're scarfing down three slices and they're just sipping water.

So much free food at Columbia. If this is a key concern for you I think it might jump to the top of your list. It's not just lunch talks (which I actually find interesting some of the time, although I admit I mostly do my class reading during). There's happy hours, dinners, and the firm events..

I think you could safely bring your food budget down to like $150/month second semester just shopping at Trader Joe's to fill in weekends/some evenings (if you didn't go out, which I guess would be weird). Then again, sometimes it's nice to not have to hang around the law school and stand in line and shit just to eat. But it's always there.

We have a nonpizza lunch pretty much every day. Usually there's 2-3 to choose from. Speakers you have to listen to range from awesome (Scalia) to pretty interesting (Newt Gingrich) to weird (Ralph Nader) to so common I get them all confused (federal judges) to boring (academics).

UChicago's food game is pretty good too. Lots of barbecue, Thai, Mediterranean, etc.

+1. There's a ton of variety, and I would say there is an average of two options for lunch each day. I don't remember a day since starting school that there wasn't at least one, and I've seen as many as four.

I thought Northwestern was a good free food school, but now I'm not so sure. Usually each week belongs to a club, so they have events and have free food, some have an event 4 or 5 days a week but pretty often they will only do 3 events a week, and now the school made a policy that clubs cannot have events on Wednesday since that is reserved for school events (that often do not have food or serve Connie's).
When there is food it's usually good (except Connie's), lots of Chipotle, Potbelly's, Gino's East, Flaco's Tacos, Empanadas...

No food > Connie's. Seriously, admits, listen to Micdiddy: tell this school that you won't stand for any more Connie's.

Are these free lunches common at all law schools, or is this largely a t14 thing?

There were a lot free lunches at the T50 I went to prior to transferring. I could usually get free food 3-4 days a week. Columbia is way better, though. Never have to pay for lunch if I don't want to (assuming you're willing to eat whatever is there).

But has Nick Collison spoken at your school?
