For law school exams, assuming no issues anywhere else, are you not allowed to write about aspects of the law not discussed in class?

This is highly likely a waste of your time. IF you miraculously get through every issue meticulously, then go back and improve the organization or attempt to articulate things better. Chances are you won't have this luxury. Don't do this UNLESS the professor has a history of scoring points for it. It really pays to know your prof.

Most law professors probably wouldn't give you points for discussing aspects of the law that don't derive at least to a degree from class or the casebook.

Nearly every professor I've taken has said that no points would be awarded for discussion of materials outside of those presented in class.

I can promise you this: you will never, ever, ever have time to discuss aspects of law covered outside of class while still hitting things covered within class.

Even if you somehow could do this, there is little if any chance your prof. would give you points for it. Also, you really shouldn't learn law outside what is covered in class as a 1L. There's a good chance that you'll either (1) learn it wrong, or (2) your extracurricular reading will confuse you on a topic that was covered in class. Either way, just don't do this.

You definitely could, especially if it were a takehome exam. It's still not a good idea.

Find a LR article your professor has written and quote from it on the exam. He/she will love that.
