The common names I hear thrown around here are DOJ and SEC. I'm just trying to get a better feel for what this kind of work entails, and was wondering if anyone had a more complete list of federal government agencies that hire lawyers. Also, if anyone has links to any outside resources explaining this work in more detail it would be appreciated. Thanks!

I really think all of them probably do. The larger the agency, the more lawyers they will have.

I have been a gov contractor and/or gov employee for well over a decade, and have worked at numerous agencies, and all of them have lawyers. Some have considerable more than others.

If you're in law school, check with your CSO for the login info for the Arizona handbook of govt honors info - it lists entry-level honors programs, which is how many agencies hire entry level candidates (if they hire entry level at all). But beyond that, yes, pretty much every agency hires lawyers. Even if their mission seems unconnected to law (say, NEH or the Smithsonian), every agency is also an employer/independent entity, and so hires essentially the equivalent of in-house counsel to handle labor/personnel issues, as well as all the other kinds of things that in-house attorneys do for private companies.
