I am an 0L bound for a T14 school. What are people's thoughts on medical malpractice law?

1. Are there big firms that specialize in medical malpractice suits?

2. Are there prestigious ones or are they all just ambulance chasers?

3. Is it usually lucrative? Immediately or gradually?

4. Is it beneficial to have a medical background? Entirely immaterial?

5. Is it feasible for a competent, motivated individual to start a lucrative practice in this field after a few years at a firm?

Medical malpractice cases are notorious for costing a fortune to try, and generally, the plaintiff's firm fronts most of the costs. You may need quite a large bankroll to start your own practice.

Just think, even if a homerun walks into your shop the first day, it may be 2+ years before you get a judgment; in the meantime, you collect zero fees while also fronting a pile of money (upwards of 100k is not uncommon).
