When do you start targeting a specific field?

So having never even taken a law school class, the legal world is still very much a mystery to me. As much as an 0L can know, I am pretty confident I know a few different career paths I would be very happy pursuing. My question though, is when would I have to know for sure what I want to do exactly? When do people start to get on different "paths"?

For example, to be a prosecutor or defense attorney it seems that you have to "show interest" in that early on. When is early on?

My understanding of it is that what you do 1L summer is the first signal you can give?

Also, I've come to the conclusion that above all else, the best thing you can do for any job as a 1L is get good grades.
