Has the brutal hiring market positively impacted the quality of recently-minted JDs?

Most law students now know that if they don’t absolutely crush it during school, they’ll be screwed. So regardless of the fact that only a select few will receive A's, most students are still firing on all cylinders.

Is there any new data from law firms that report on satisfaction with incoming recruits that reflects this new reality?

Quick answer: the average should be a bit better, because less below average lawyers are getting hired.
The top of the crop has always been pretty darn good/motivated and that is unlikely to change

Though, this of course doesn't address the problematic correlating of law school success with lawyer quality
