On how to type faster

(First off, I know this will sound gunner-ish. It is not meant to be, I'm just bored and was curious about this.)

A lot of the popular "Succeeding in Law School" threads that are around emphasize fast typing. A lot of the time, that means understanding the material in the class you are taking an exam, which makes sense. But other than that, has anyone found good ways to practice on speeding up their typing?

Edit: Also, how fast do people tend to type in law school? I'm probably around 65-70ish, not sure where that falls in terms of everyone else.

I remember as a third grader, when I first got Starcraft for our new PC. I came in with 8-10 wpm and within a week that summer was up to 35-40, and the whole time I doubt I typed anything more sophisticated than "lol," "gg hf" and "You're such a noob."

It's just practice, and the context of a game is such that you often want to get your message across quickly, i.e. let him know he's a noob now, not 10 seconds later, or actually coordinate while it's still timely haha.

I haven't gotten into a computer game since then, really, but it all comes down to focused practice. You don't have to set up an hour a day of "training" or anything (please don't!), but whenever you use the computer just think about typing faster and more accurately. You'll use the computer plenty before you go to law school no matter what, and It's the intention of getting faster more than anything else (e.g. taking 300 random basketball shots per day versus taking 300 shots each with a sharp focus on form, follow through and orientation... the latter's going to make you a much better shooter). You could even think about it when typing a post here.

I don't think you're necessarily in a bad place with a consistent 65-70 wpm, though. I might be able to type faster than you in terms of raw typing speed, but when it comes to an exam it's not like you're spraying out words nonstop - there's some down time for you to process the information, figure out where to go with your answer next, and so on. I imagine test-taking typing speeds are a good bit different from standard haha.

Or you could take a silly little typing class via software. I did one in the 5th grade (it was like a cat or something teaching me) and was typing better than 140+ max/120+ average by middle school. It's just like anything else - master the fundamentals (most important part by far), do a lot of repetitions, and you'll get faster. Most important part is making sure that the right fingers are hitting each letter/number/etc. to maximize efficiency and ease of repetition.

Yea this is what I figured, just wanted to make sure that when it comes to typing out a lot of information quickly that I have the means to type as quickly as I am thinking.

holy crap. 140 is ridiculous. I can only do like 50 when I have to read off what I"m typing. Granted I can go a lot faster when what I'm typing is in my head and so I can look at the keyboard a bit. Maybe I need to start working on this.

Yeah it's fun

Honestly though don't put much into that sort of typing. When you type what you're thinking you go much quicker and avoid the stupid punctuation that trips you up because who ever uses semi colons and brackets and shit.

And at the same time, you're not repeating what is already written...
