I read that a subdued blue or red tie is the standard for interviews but despite searching for pictures with that phrasing I am having a hard time knowing exactly what such ties should look like.

Agreed. Though I only own cheap ties on the theory that a tie's a tie, but that one in the OP actually looks demonstrably nicer to me. Maybe it's just the British currency making it look classy.

I have only owned cheap ties until I recently inherited my grandfather's Brooks Brothers tie collection, and you really do get what you pay for. When you look at them side by side the difference is very obvious. I think it would be a good idea to buy/wear a tie of high quality for an interview. Interviewers will definitely notice those things (I think). After I inherited those ties I got a job that required wearing a suit almost every day, and I began to notice when people would be wearing nice or cheap looking ties. I would think attorneys are the same.

OP, just make sure you can tie a better knot than the one in that picture. That knot is hideous.

I have, toilet-wad! And, it still isn't worth the money. Give me the $150. I'll make you a tie and cook you dinner.

I'm not a fan. I do own a few Thomas Pink and Ferragamo ties, though
