SHould I leave controversial student groups off my resume?

Post by timeandspace11 » Wed Nov 14, 2012 8:27 pm

I was in a group that I think could be considered controversial (students for Justice in Palestine) Will that be looked at negatively by admissions officers?

Unless you had a leadership position or you don't have any work experience, you don't need to include student groups that you were a member of in your resume.

Only leave it on your resume if you are comfortable with the fact that some employers may decline to hire you based on your membership or leadership of that group. Double edged sword, though. It may make it easier for them to rule you out, but also makes it easier for you to rule them out, in a sense.

Though, if you are applying to Bush era DOJ, then the answer is leave it off.

Edit: Oops, admissions, not employers. My brain is somewhere else. The answer is: retake.

Depends on the school.

If its relevant to the work you want to do (social justice?) then it may establish a track record.

I think you should leave it on. Law schools want a diverse viewpoint class. It's going to depend on the school. And it won't really matter much as far as shedding light on your views unless you write an entire essay on your experience with that group or the problems that you feel Palestinians face. It definitely helps to make you a little different from your peer applicants, most will look like boring clones.

I think for admissions you should be fine, because a committee of individuals will be assessing your candidacy and even if someone is firmly against Palestine their sole opinion shouldn't be enough to ding you.

For employers down the line on the other hand, I probably wouldn't put it on your resume, especially considering what a touchy subject that can be for many people.

Off... for schools it will probably not matter, but why take the risk? For later in career, when you apply for jobs, definitely no...
Opinionated people are not preferred in job places unless it is a joke organization like Law School Democrats.
