Softs for NYC law schools
I want to get into Fordham, NYU or Columbia. I'm taking the LSAT in OCT and I have a finance degree from FAU with a 3.38 GPA. What are some strong softs I can get on my record? If you recommend community service, then how many hours should I get? I was a waiter my entire college career and never had time for extracurricular activities. I quit my job a few weeks ago merely for LSAT studying and working on some softs. I really want to make a difference so throw some good ones at me.

Find a cure for cancer.
In all seriousness, assuming you are applying for the fall 2013 school year, it is doubtful that you have enough time to establish a credible soft. Spend your time studying for the LSAT and finding way to market the skills and experience that you currently have. Good luck.

Unless you work at a prestigious job, win a major academic award, get published in an academic journal, write a best selling book, win a Pulitzer, or do something else that is particularly of note before applying for law school, these are what matter:
Columbia: 175-177+
NYU: 172-174+
Fordham: 167-170+

Well I do run a sportsblog with a few friends that has pretty much "blown up" http://www.beermugsports.com were on track for 1 million views in one month ( hit 50k in 24 hours the other day)... I don't think I should list that because it's geared towards "adults" ... you will see what I mean if you drop by. It's not porn or anything, but we do have pictures up of hot chicks and write profanity to give a comical spin on sports. & I actually would like to get some type of award, how would you recommend I do that? Any known competitions around this time of year?
my current "softs" or "work experience"
-bus boy
-togo specialist
-waiter(cheesecake factory 3 years, Macaroni Grill 2)
-worked at best buy (6 months)

You might be best served to get a few years WE to distance yourself from your GPAnosleeptillsuccess wrote:Well I do run a sportsblog with a few friends that has pretty much "blown up" http://www.beermugsports.com were on track for 1 million views in one month ( hit 50k in 24 hours the other day)... Thank you so much I appreciate that!!
I appreciate the work experience info as well... but this is a now or never thing for me if you were referring to putting in years of work experience rather than listing what I already have.

Re: Softs for NYC law schools
did you mean WE as in to get a job relevant to my undergraduate major for a few years then list it??
Or list what I've already done..
If it was the first than I mean I want to get into law school for 2013 Fall and I don't want to burn 2 years then apply in my late 20s. If it was the latter then I misinterpreted your statement.
Or list what I've already done..

Post-grad Work experience, say two or three years, then apply. Going straight thru is going to be tough with your low GPA.nosleeptillsuccess wrote:did you mean WE as in to get a job relevant to my undergraduate major for a few years then list it??

I'm not scared of tough... as long as it's feasible I'll find a way. Got my Testmaster course July 20-Oct 1st and I've been crushing those Powerscore books... I'm using this week to write up a good personal statement and get involved in some softs

Well then softs are irrelevant at this point, andnosleeptillsuccess wrote:I'm not scared of tough... as long as it's feasible I'll find a way. Even though I do plan on carrying them out through 2013?... I think at least partaking in trying to change the world late is better than not at all... I could be wrong.

Re: Softs for NYC law schools
Its just that, like DK said, LS admission is almost completely numbers based. I probably had the worst softs ever and admissions pretty much looked the other way on that because My LSAT was above median.nosleeptillsuccess wrote:Even though I do plan on carrying them out through 2013?... If you really want to do some volunteer work, think of a cause that you actually care about. Can you run? Maybe you should run in a different charitable 5k every week. Do you have a soft spot for poor people? Volunteer at a shelter or soup kitchen. Do you think youre a good role model? Join the boys and girls club.
Just remember that because your GPA will be a drag on every top schools median, you need to really impress them on the LSAT. That means going above and beyond Testmasters.

I feel like the Fordham numbers are... but I believe my friend here was trying to formulate numbers for a "sure shot" for me. Considering my GPA is low and I lack on softs.. I mean I did graduate with a degree in Finance which has higher difficulty than most majors...

well, like he already said, softs don't matter nearly as much as the LSATnosleeptillsuccess wrote:I feel like the Fordham numbers are... but I believe my friend here was trying to formulate numbers for a "sure shot" for me. Nobel Prize? Olympic medal?nosleeptillsuccess wrote:So back to the softs...Should I list the blog? and what are some good softs? lol
Realistically, there are no softs you are likely to acquire in time for applications to matriculate in 2013.
I have very good softs and my cycle was pretty much dead on target for my numbers.

This is very true. It's not fascinating, but softs don't matter as much as the Lsat. You'd be best served focusing on that.dingbat wrote:Nobel Prize? Olympic medal?nosleeptillsuccess wrote:So back to the softs...Should I list the blog? and what are some good softs? lol

Nothing really that you can do in the next year would likely make a difference soft wise. You are probably better off spending that time studying even more for the LSAT.dingbat wrote:Nobel Prize? If you think the blog might possibly offend someone I would leave it off. (Unless you have turned this blog into a huge money maker, then it is more of a successful start-up business.)
I actually had softs that made a huge difference in my cycle but it took a lot longer than a year or two to get them. It is possible just not that likely in a year.
Good luck on the LSAT.
