I've read all the threads about laptops, but I just want to know about screen size. I've always had 14, but would 15 be better for pulling up two documents next to each other when writing, taking exams, etc.?

I've found that 17" is great for doing the split screen thing.

And I've found it bulky to carry around, but YMMV.

You can't pretend to dual monitor on a single monitor, unless it's 20+"

Buy the 13", and get a 2nd monitor for use at home.

Can exams be written at home, on a different monitor? I was hoping to stick with a 13-inch laptop for note-taking, but use an external monitor in my room for exams, reading, and everything else.

Depends on your school.

I'm selling my huge 17.3" laptop because, although I have to admit the 1600x900 screen is gorgeous and super useful for reading two documents at once, I find it to be a huge hassle to carry around.
