How helpful is it to read the E&E's over the summer

It's not helpful at all.
What E&E would you be reading?

If you're trying to somehow memorize law--don't
If you're trying to get ahead--stop

You have no idea where your professors will even begin with the course matter.
Law doesn't a start at point A and go to point Z
Some profs teach from point Z and work back to A. Some begin at M.
You'll have no context for what you're reading or even if you're reading something that will be taught.

If reading and E&E were beneficial they would recommend that you buy an E&E and read it. They don't because you shouldn't.

If you want some summer reading then just pick up a book you like and read it. Honestly, you don't need to try and cram up for the first day of law school.

Did you see where he talked about how to be effective in law school, not how to be effective the summer before law school?

as countless people have said on here, don't read anything the summer before your 1L. If you must be gunnerish, then read Getting to Maybe (which I for one did not find even the least beneficial but some people do)

Depends on what your teacher wants, which is why I don't recommend reading them. In my case, the answer was "none of them," except for Chemerinsky. The supps just threw me off to what was taught in class. Then again, you can't read all of the Chem supp. It's like as long as a text. But I mean if you want to spin your wheels, go right ahead.

If you have that much time on your hands, learn how to do legal research. That will save you a lot of time when you actually start law school. Take the West and Lexis tutorials so you will be familiar with both. You can find links to the tutorials at

Am I the only one who things E&E's suck. They seem like they were written for 4th grade school children.

Ya they are only useful if you have literally no idea what's going on.

Yes. Since in reading it can help boosting up confidence and it's an active mental process.

I spent the summer reading E&Es. Complete waste of time and I could have spent that summer doing more productive things (search my post history to find out what those things are). It is a waste of time at best, and counterproductive at worst. I did well first year, but 0L substantive prep had nothing to do with it, and often ran up against the nuances of my particular professors.
