Top Law Schools

Hello All,

Current parent inquiring about law school wardrobe. My son will be going to law school in the fall and I want to get him a few tshirts and sweatshirts that have the school logo. Just wondering whether it's "cooler" to have just the name of the school or specifically refer to the law school. Like "Columbia" v "Columbia Law."

I know this is nitpicky, but I don't want to buy something he'll be embarrassed to wear.

I see my school's gear all around, both the University clothes, and the law school specific clothes.

My experience is that most law students are proud of being law students. If I were giving a gift, I would choose one that referred to the law school directly. Considering my own wardrobe, I don't own anything that refers to the university generally, only to the law school.

If the school has broad name recognition, like say Harvard, I think going with the specific department make sense. Everyone, it seems, owns a Harvard sweatshirt (I know I wore one when in junior high) but Harvard Law School clothing is a bit rarer. Also, choosing clothing that reflects the law school offers tacit (or at least non-verbal) approval of your child's decision to attend law school.

Incorrect. Tacit means to imply but not to express by words or by actions. Thus non-verbal is not the same as tacit.

Even if what you said were true, it still doesn't make a ton of sense in context.

If this is specifically for Columbia, I should let you know that CLS will give their incoming class Columbia Law School Class of 2015 hoodies, so you might be better off buying a sweatshirt or t-shirt that says Columbia Law on it.

I would go with ____ Law.

Also, as you've now had a preview from this thread of the kind of inane semantic debates your kid will be engaged in for the next three years, I hope you do send some care packages too.

Money would be better spent on booze and ritalin.. but if those are covered I'd go with clothing specific to the law school
