When bidding/applying for a legal position during law school and after, do employers customarily require all three: resume, cover letter, and application? Only resume and cover letter? Or just resume?

For the 1L summer jobs I've applied to:
Almost always cover letter/resume. Applications are uncommon but not rare (maybe 10-20% of my apps). Most want a transcript. A lot want a writing sample.

It's not really important to 0L's. And even for current students, every application will specify what they want. If it doesn't just send basic stuff (resume/cover letter, maybe transcript) and if they like those and want other documents they'll ask for them. And any final questions you have can be answered by your school's CSO.
