Realistically speaking, what is the % of law students who end up in BigLaw after graduation?

Why is this anonymous and should it be in the Choosing a Law School forum?

Seems a bit low for UVA.

The percentage is probably pretty close to 50%+.

If you search for law school employment charts, they will give you a pretty accurate approximation.

Yea, I wasn't counting clerkship people who end up in biglaw, and also assumed a lot of UVA people go into bigfedgov.

If you define "BigLaw" as firms with 100+ attorneys, it's more like 60% at UVA.

BigFedGov straight from law school is a total myth ITE. More of a myth than MidLaw.

This is the best available data. Is is old, and unfortunately the market is not as strong now, but it will show you how all schools place relative to one another.

http://www.law.com/pdf/nlj/20080414empl ... trends.pdf

More recent (but still not very recent) and less complete data:

http://www.law.com/jsp/nlj/PubArticleNL ... slreturn=1

For comparison's sake, it's fair to approximate biglaw placement as NLJ 250 placement. It's not perfect, but it's good enough.

HTH

Thank you.

Surprising that only half of 2010 Harvard graduates ended up in NLJ250. Then again, Harvard had a huge graduating class that year!

A ton clerked and went to the federal government as well. Keep in mind this after graduation, so a substantially larger proportion of students got - or were at least eligible for - 2L summer associate positions, at least from the top schools.

I don't purport to have exact numbers for any of these schools. But the idea that Gtown is equivalent to UVA makes me LOL. UVA has a lot more pull than Georgetown in DC, and a lot more pull nationwide.

My understanding is based solely on my anecdotal experiences going to another school in the greater DC market (which can be broadly defined to include numerous schools in DC, MD, and VA). Georgetown seems to be really struggling, as I know a lot of GULC students who don't have anything... GULC's problem is that they're a T14 (and not even really that any more) without a home market....

Well.

Thank God you showed up with your anecdotes. This thread was getting awfully on track with all of the data and surveys and facts being posted.

And we can't have that now can we!

this link seems pretty relevant
http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 1&t=150681

According to the linked charts for the class of 2009, NLJ250 employment (with Clerkship in parentheses)
Lots of assumptions, but oh well
UVA - 53% (11%)
GULC - 43% (5%)
UCLA - 35% (5%)
Davis - 17% (3%)
Hastings - 15% (1%)

(1) this seems like a 0L question

(2) Rather than speculate, here are UVA's detailed employment stats for 2008-10: http://www.law.virginia.edu/html/career/stats.htm

1) Exactly, you don't
2) I'd say maybe equivalent to slightly higher pull in DC, and more pull nationwide
3) You've got to realize that in a school that big, you are going to see "a lot" of students who don't have anything. What's more important in this case is the percentages, which someone provided in this thread
4) That's ridiculous. If GULC isn't a T14 then neither is Cornell. How can you say they don't have a home market when they're the best school in all of MD/DC/Northern VA (and all of VA excluding UVA). If you look at the attorney profiles firms in DC, you will notice just how much pull Gtown has in DC. It is pretty substantial.

I usually don't post in these kinds of threads, but you guys have to realize when you're giving advice to a 0L like the OP not to be overly pessimistic. He's probably taking your advice and running with it.
