Top Law Schools

I can't find this info on the U of M website so figured I'd throw it out here... does anyone know what books are used for the standard 1L classes at Michigan? Version and ISBN would be even better if you had that info. Thanks.

Probably depends on which professor you end up with.

Whatever you do, DO NOT buy your case books early and read them. That would be a bigger wast of time than reading the E&E's and other 0L prep.

Do not go to Michigan, but Frier and White case book is probably a safe bet for contracts if you have Frier or White (both of them teach contracts there).

Outside of potential money lost if I buy the wrong ones, why not - isn't it progress/learning regardless?

This a complete derail. And as an absolute generalization it's absurd.

As to OP, you should definitely not start reading casebooks before you start. Even among the minority camp that thinks 0L prep is a good idea, no one suggests reading casebooks before school starts. As a matter of strategy, it's just not a good idea. Casebooks are massive, and in most classes you only read scattered portions of the books, often completely out of order. As a practical matter, there's a broad array of books that are assigned 1L year. Assuming you don't even know your professors yet, there is no way to know what books you'll have.
