Most apartments in DC, especially those near schools, open up in either May or August. Since you'll be starting your search from scratch, you're much better off trying to land a lease in May - also, you'll want to hop on that before all the Kongressional Kiddies get here for the summer and start saving the world (and takin yo' leasez).
