I'm sorry, but I can't answer many questions relating to the journal tryout process. The way those are graded is kept mostly secret. I don't necessarily agree with a blanket prohibition on discussion of grading policy, but I suppose it's understandable.

I will say this: Don't assume every member of the Law Review is that intimately related to the process. It is frustrating to have 1Ls approach me with amazingly drawn out (and invariably dull) questions about their tryout before I can respond that I have to direct them to another member of the Managing Board.

Most people I've talked to are going to top level Big Law firms. The folks going to smaller firms or markets seem to have intended that result.

If you were also admitted to Univ of Chicago and Columbia and were unsure about your career goals would you pick UVa or one of the other ones? Thanks

I go to UVA and you represent the reason why this school is perceived as being one of the douchiest schools. To anyone reading this thread, don't let this guy turn you off from UVA. People here are actually pretty cool. We actually have fun, like playing softball and drinking beer.

It's difficult to evaluate that without a significant measure of hindsight bias, but I'll give it a shot. I came into law school with a fairly strong desire to pursue an academic career, but not strong enough that I wanted to, say, enter a humanities Ph.D. program. Regardless of whether you want to do academia or Big Law (I won't speak to PI, because I never considered it), I think Chicago is probably a cut above. Columbia, on the other hand, while better for Big Law is not appreciably stronger in academic placement.

Thus, both are likely better options for someone who is truly undecided, but I would have given much more consideration to Chicago than Columbia given my own predilections.
