Hi, I was accepted and was just offered a good deal of cash. I hope someone could post their opinion of the school. I'm thinking of doing int'l law. I heard Newark isn't such a great place... any comments...?

I grew up in the area. It's not a "dump" but if you're used to the suburbs, you've got a shock coming. Just be smart. As for the night life, NYC is only a train ride away.

The Rutgers name carries a lot of presence in the NJ area. If you want a job that isn't Biglaw, you'll probably get it. I think clerkship rate is pretty high as well, though I suspect it's for areas like municipal courts.

When you think of 'international' you think of big cities with bustling ports, big businesses, and rapidly expanding infrastructure...does newark strike you as a place where 'international' law would really be a good idea? Honestly any law firm outside the top 14 with an 'international' law program is bsing it's students. International law means internationally known law schools, which really means harvard, yale, stanford, and g'town, in that order. The other top 14's are 1b to the aforementioned schools 1a. Rutgers newark is nowhere near that list. Not trying to be mean, just trying to alert you to the ridiculousness of the claims of some law schools to suck money out of students.

It is also a growing city, with an small inflow of yuppies but a massive inflow of immigrants--again, transnational law at hand.

Newark is incredibly close to NYC with multiple access points through rapid transit at either end. The PATH train from Penn Station becomes a subway in NYC with stops in lower Manhattan up to midtown. The NJ Transit train from Broad St. will also take you to Midtown. Newark is NJ's major city with corporations and courts. If you can get yourself over the stereotypes, you'd see that it provides most of what you need to get a foothold in any type of law that you want.

When I stayed there in person for multiple nights (downtown) visiting law schools, I was pretty happy with it. There are a few hangouts for students, and a good amount of places to get decent food in different prices ranges, and the basics like groceries and coffee. It is a "campusy" area that is not completely devoid of life...and downright busy during the day. The city has become immensely safer in recent years.

So its a very livable place, and most importantly, its close to NYC.

I'm waiting on Fordham, but in the meantime, I'm planning on Rutgers.

If anyone reading this is currently deciding between Rutgers and other places, know that once you sign a 12-mo lease Rutgers will give you in-state tuition even for your first year (you become a NJ resident after 12 months, but they'll enact it sooner). They have on-campus housing 2 blocks from the law school, including a brand new highrise with floors for law students, and you can sign a 12-mo lease in these (8.5k-10.5k/yr...just under market rate).

I hear Newark is a rough town, but at least not as bad as Baltimore

I will be going to the 3/28 Open House and there is a 99% chance that I will be attending. I am pretty sure I will rent in Jersey City. If anyone else is in this situation, please contact me.

I'll also be attending the open house. Unless I unrealistically get accepted with major $$$ from Fordham, I'll be going to Rutgers. I'll be going part time, and I already have an apartment in NJ -- married w/ baby on the way (not looking for roommates).

Akscoob, I basically agree with what you say. Besides the fact that many people have told me that RN has a better reputation in NYC than SH, the fact that RN is a campus and has on and off-campus housing options close at hand broke that deal for me. I'm about to send my deposit there.

With all of the bright lighting near the campus and the student presence, I don't even worry too much about getting around at night. I'm sure I'll come back from NYC late at night every now and then, and I suppose you can get a cab or use the city subway in that case. RN also has a shuttle that runs through the evening to Penn Station and other points.

I plan on living in University Square for my first year. I think a full year lease is in the high 10s. For having your own room and a kitchen, that's not terrible. As those of you who are going to the open house will see, there are some food markets and cheap food options right near the campus on University and Washington Streets, so that will enhance the living situation.

Let me know what you all thought of the open house.

Anyone have any idea of the Environmental Law programs at Rutgers?

They seem to have very strong coursework in environmental and land-use planning law when you scan the courseguide. When I visited I spoke to a ConLaw prof who also teaches upper-level land-use classes, and he mentioned some interesting experiences he had in suing various NJ townships over their land-use planning infractions.

I think Rutgers is very active in this field of law, and NJ is very active in terms of regulation and legislation on environmental matters. It is also the most urbanized state so there are myriad land-use issues...same goes for NYC.

I'm interested in real estate and land-use law, so I'm sure I'll get into some environmental topics.

You probably already checked all this out but it looks like they have a great environmental clinic. Below is the website which has info on cases they have worked on.

donewithannarbor - I am planning on living in University Square also. I sent in the housing deposit last week.

Awesome. I'm hoping that the dorms there will be a nice magnet for traditional students who are coming straight from undergrad, and others who want to get to know people easily. I didn't look inside, but it looked like a nice, well-located place from the outside. Apparently the views are pretty cool.

With our limited social lives and all, it will be nice to have people around to do stuff with when it is possible.

Has anyone else sent a deposit for R-N? I just did.

If you have, post it on here, and let us know if you plan to live on campus/in Newark/in another city. If you want, let us know what type of numbers you're coming in, just as an anecdotal way to see what kind of class we are.

158/3.5 ... living on campus.

I put in my deposit last week, and I plan on living on campus. I didn't go to the Accepted Students Day, but I plan on visiting for the first time in April, so I got a few questions:

1.) What hotels did you guys stay at? I'm trying to find a cheap place that can get me to campus quickly.

2.) Anyone go to ASD last Friday? And does anyone know if there are tours available during the school week?

^Yo, the Robert Treat hotel on Washington Pl. off of Broad St is three blocks from Rutgers Law. We had a perfectly good double room there for only 89-99/night over four nights. The service is good and there are nice skyline views.

Email admissions and i'm sure someone will give you a tour and class visit.
