Thank you!

Do you know where most married students choose to live? And if it's not in University housing, when is the right time to start looking? Someone suggested using an agent (but maybe that was the agents suggestion, LOL).

What are the rooms like in Lenfest and Lionsgate? Can't find any pictures on the CLS Web site.

Also, what are your fellow 1Ls like? You sometimes hear (maybe unfairly, I don't know) that CLS might be a little stuffy compared to, say, NYU.

+1

Also, what do you think would be the pros and cons (other than the price) of living in a studio or an apartment there?

Here's the floorplan for Lenfest, if it helps.

Question for Frank: In your opinion, is the extra cost of living in a single/studio worth it or do students have sufficient privacy & a lack of crazy apartment-mates in the apartment shares?

How is the On Campus Interview process for 1Ls? Heard of any 1Ls get an SAs? What is the surrounding area like? Is there much to do on the upper west side, or do you have to head to midtown or lower? Thanks for taking questions!

Frank wrote:I'll stick around a bit to take questions. It's been a long time since posting on this site, but it was helpful for applying. I must admit, though, it gives a shockingly positive view of the economic outlook (or, simply ignores it). It is not a good time for jobs (and, yes, I know that is scary, but it is the absolute truth, even at CLS).
Thanks for doing this thread. So what is the economic outlook from your perspective? Would you say top 2/3 is good for biglaw?

Also, if we are looking for non-UAH housing that is near the campus, which areas tend to be safer/more quiet? (E.g., 90th - 125th street, between Riverside and Amsterdam, etc.) And what would be a minimum price range for a studio or 1 BR in those areas? I am not familiar with the UWS housing market at all.

Alternatively, would you say that doing a 30 min-hour commute twice a day would be doable, or would that be too hectic and make it difficult to bond with classmates/study groups?

Thanks!

1. How is the On Campus Interview process for 1Ls? Have not done it yet. It happens the summer after your first year (August). We will be getting training on it very soon

2. Heard of any 1Ls get an SAs? Indeed, I have. Before this economy, it used to be much more common. Nowadays, not so much. But, diversity programs are still strong, and some non-diversity programs are still happening. Some 1Ls have SA jobs, yes. But, most firms have cut back on these drastically, and a ton have no 1L program, nowadays. Even before this economy, it was very hard to get a 1L SA, just to give you perspective.

3. What is the surrounding area like? Very nice. The subway isn't too far, and there are some bars/restaurants nearby. Everything is within walking distance, and you can walk down to Harlem, too, if you'd like. Nothing is too far. It's a city.

4. Is there much to do on the upper west side, or do you have to head to midtown or lower? Totally stuff to do around Columbia. Do not worry about it. You can go midtown or lower, of course, if you want, but there is plenty to do around Columbia--bars, restaurants, etc. It is jsut enough to be entertained while not being a nuissance.
How do 1Ls find out about summer opportunities? Does Columbia have a program for them? Is it just searching on your own? Also, the diversity programs, how would one find more information on them? Do you know of any people who had significant work experience before school and has that help with jobs? Thanks again!

Thank you for starting this thread and keeping with it.

What is the workload seriously like? I'm sure lots of people are trying to choose between Chi and Columbia. I know that you don't know exactly what it's like at Chicago, but can you give an indication on about how brutal the 1L curve is?
