hi all,

my goal is to get into big law in ny for a few years so i’m wondering how helpful a clerkship with a non-sdny magistrate judge in new york would be, vs staying at my current mid sized firm and lateraling after a year (my current firm has a great wlb which im reticent to leave but would if the benefits of the clerkship for my big law prospects were huge). the clerkship would be a financial burden/toll on my personal life but i would go forward if the benefits were undeniable vs staying where i am rn.

in terms of grades i was top ~33% from a t20, i just never did OCI/big law SA due to some personal conflicts at the time and have been playing catch up ever since. i have a pretty solid network of attorneys who have been great and said they would be willing to help me lateral after i get some more experience, and i would continue networking wherever i end up.

Nothing of substance to say other than do not address a magistrate judge as a magistrate.

"Because the word “magistrate” is merely descriptive of the type of judge, to address a Magistrate Judge simply as “Magistrate” is akin to improperly addressing a Lieutenant Colonel as “Lieutenant,” or a Bankruptcy Judge as “Bankruptcy.”
