Where to clerk for dist. court

I am clerking in a few years in DC/2nd COA, and I go to YSH. My goal is to eventually practice law in my home state, which is not on the east coast. I would like to do a district court clerkship but it would have to be several years out (think 2026 or 2027). I have thought about applying to SDNY/DDC/EDNY, etc., and if the next few years go well, I might consider applying for a SCOTUS clerkship (though I'm guessing my chances of getting something will be very low). I, however, want to maintain strong professional connections in my home state (think CA/IL), and in the long run I'd be interested in working for the state govt (SG/AG's office). Should the desire to do a district court clerkship in the area where I want to practice (a very competitive district court (think CD Cal), but not SDNY) override maximizing my chances to succeed at getting a SCOTUS clerkship? Could one be a strong candidate despite not having a feeder district court judge?
