2022-2023 Post-Clerkship Hiring

Post by Anonymous User » Wed Oct 19, 2022 9:04 pm

A place to discuss post-clerkship hiring for those finishing up clerkships in 2023. The previous years' threads have been super helpful and I thought I'd get this one going.

For those of us in large markets, are we thinking Thanksgiving to start seriously brainstorming and networking, January to start applying continuing through the Spring?

Does anyone think a possible 2023 recession will effect post-clerkship hiring this cycle?

Kinda wondering how it’ll affect 2024 too

I would assume that a recession would affect transactional practice groups more than litigation.

I thought January was a bit early since firms might not know their hiring needs for the following Fall yet, but I also don't want to miss the boat.

Has anyone consulted with former clerks or their school's career guidance office about the application timeline?

I am hoping to take a few months of vacation after my clerkship. Two years without vacation has been... tiring.

Is this standard? Should I communicate this to firms prior to getting an offer? I figure it would be best to get an offer and then give them my start date. But I don't want to mislead firms into thinking I am immediately available after my clerkship.

I'm planning on taking some time off, but I just intend to ask HR if/after I get an offer.

From what I've heard from former clerks, if your clerkship end date is August-October, sending out applications mid-January isn't too early, firms will be interviewing and giving out offers then. All depends on how demand for litigation shakes out with volatile markets, but that's generally how it has gone in past years. My plan is to start sending out applications mid-Jan.

Is anyone actually hiring yet? I thought we had a few more weeks at least.

One interview and one rejection from different V10s (Vault is meaningless, I know--just trying to maintain anonymity)

Did you direct apply to firms that you didn’t have a connection with? I was advised to wait until the new year before applying.

Ding from Bartlit Beck, no movement from any other lit boutiques. Only applying to boutiques as I'll go back to my DC big law firm otherwise but most have said January is a good time to apply.
